We are so sorry to hear of the passing of Rick. He was a great friend to my family. He and my father, Goro Nagase (passed away in Sept, 2022), were in the same research group (Prof. Skopik's) at University of Delaware. We had many good times with him. He was such a caring and compassionate person. He helped our family through some very difficult times. He always kept in touch with my parents and was very concerned when they were hospitalized. He spoke at my mother's funeral. We miss him very much.

Rick was the first person I met when I arrived at DSU for my interview in 2004. His kind, relaxed nature immediately put me at ease. I could always count on Rick whenever I needed advice. He had such an important impact on all of his friends, colleagues, and especially his students. He will be greatly missed by all.

Mr. Driskill was my advisor and teacher when I was an undergraduate student in the Biology Department at DSU. He had the most caring heart and always took time to really listen to his students. It was so easy to talk with him about any questions I had. He always had more confidence in me than I had in myself. I still remember the Animal Behavior class he taught and his love for all God’s creatures. In my memory, I can still see the fern he took care of lovingly and watered in the old Biology library room. He may have had a much smaller office than other professors on campus, but his heart was huge; there was room for everyone. Just like the care he took with his plants, he poured so much love and care in our lives as students. Today I have that privilege to keep his legacy alive by pouring into the lives of DSU students as an adjunct teacher. I cannot fill his big shoes (literally and metaphorically because I am only 4 foot 10) but I try to emulate his kindness and patience as much as I can . We will meet again, faithful servant of God and teacher. Until then, I miss you dearly.

As a dedicated teacher Rick impacted so many students with his unsurpassed dedication to helping those he taught at DSU. Arriving early, leaving late, meeting with students, he was the model teacher and person.

I joined the biology department at the University of Delaware in the fall of 1967. Rick and his roommate and lifelong friend Jeff Elliott were the first students to do research in my lab. Both graduated with degrees of distinction based on work they did for their senior theses. Jeff moved on after graduation but Rick stayed on in my lab and received a Master’s degree before joining the faculty at Delaware State.
Rick became more than a student to me and also my wife, Linda. He became our friend. On occasion he would babysit our three kids when we were in a pinch. He was a friend to the entire Skopik family. We enjoyed dinners together, trying out new restaurants and spending weekends at Cape May, NJ. I also got to know Rick’s parents, who were wonderful people.
When I look back on my 46 year career at the University of Delaware I can say that the time period during which Rick and Jeff worked in my lab were magical! Both my wife and I treasure the times we spent with Rick.
Rick will live on in the minds of those whose lives he touched. He was a remarkable person and will be tremendously missed by all of us, and, most especially, Rebecca and kids. God speed, Rick, my friend.

Thank You, Steve & Linda, for sharing about Rick so beautifully and deeply. He truly was an exceptionally kind and loving friend and companion during our time together in your lab at UD and it was a magical time for me as well, largely due to very close friendships with Rick, You and Linda. Rick will always occupy a very special place in my heart and I join you both, Rebecca and her children in mourning his passing. I will miss Rick as long as I live.

I’m so very sorry to hear of Mr. Driscoll’s passing but thankful he is rejoicing in heaven. He was one of the most amazing teachers I’ve had and became a successful science teacher (for 25 years) because of his invaluable knowledge and instruction. He went out of his way to write a glowing recommendation for me. My life has definitely been positively impacted by this amazing person. My sincere condolences to his friends and family.

My joyful and loving friendship with Richard was launched early and then firmly established during our undergraduate years at the University of Delaware. We shared the same UD dormitory for 4 years, multiple biology classes, and both did our senior research thesis projects with Prof. Steven Skopik, who also became a close and enduring friend to each of us. Rick and I also shared an apartment near campus the summer after graduation until I left to start my PhD studies at the University of Texas at Austin in the Fall of 1969. During those memorable years at UD we enjoyed doing so many things together. Although geographical distance and other things prevented us from spending time together in more recent years, I will always love Rick and deeply cherish our friendship – and it will always remain one of the most cherished of my life. In so many important ways, Rick was a beautiful, exceptionally kind and loving young man, who could also be delightfully humorous. And it is wonderful to also appreciate the loving husband and father he became since I last saw him.

My brother Jeff Elliott was great friends with Rick back in their college days and as the kid sister I met, and had a major crush on Rick . Being much younger , I was tolerated in some of the gatherings they had with other college friends . Although I only saw him a handful of times , his warmth , kindness and spirit always were evident , along with that great smile . Love the kittys’ name btw - I had a treasured cat whom I also called Meow . RIP Rick , my condolences to the family

Q: What will you miss most about Richard?
A: What I will miss most about Rick is every day when I get off work I would see him in the yard where he spent countless hours working on and I would always go over and sit and talk with him about how all the squirrels would drive him crazy because they would dig the flower bulbs that he had just planted. We would talk about everything. Rick was such a knowledgeable man that I loved just listening to what he had to say. I will truly miss my Friend. Rest in Peace my Friend........Chuck

I remember every birthday, every anniversary, every school play and concert we went to as a family. Richard made everything special, even a simple family meal around the kitchen table.
