Obituary of Katherine S. Madole

Katherine "Kate" Summerill Madole, 88, passed away December 1, 2016 at Southgate Nursing Home in Carney's Point, NJ, after an illness. She was born on March 21, 1928 in Wilmington, DE to William W. and Frieda Margaret (nee Dammann) Summerill. Kate grew up in Penns Grove, attended Penns Grove Regional High School, and studied music in Boston and New York City. After returning to Penns Grove in 1960, she married James "Jim" L. Madole and they built their life in Salem County. They were happily married for 53 years. Music was always her passion. Kate sang at local churches and events for her entire life. Until her recent illness, she was the music director at Trinity United Methodist Church. A dedicated teacher, she instilled her love for music in many children and adults. Active in local community theatre, she produced and directed many plays over the years. Kate and Jim were also involved in Penns Grove, Pennsville, and Salem County Historical Societies. They lovingly restored their historic home which they opened for various community celebrations as well as countless gatherings for family and friends. Kate is survived by son James, daughter in-law Renee, grandchildren Sydney and Jacob Madole, niece Katy Caldwell, and many friends. She was preceded in death by husband James, parents William and Frieda Summerill, sister Barbara Summerill Caldwell, and brother William W. Summerill, Jr. The family will receive friends and relatives at Laughrey Funeral Home in Pennsville on Saturday, December 10th from 9:00 to 10:00 am. The memorial service will begin immediately after the reception at 10:00 am.
