Obituary of Harry F. Schmidt

Harry F. Schmidt went home to be with the Lord on March 16, 2016. He passed away peacefully with his family and friends by his side. He was a World War II veteran, loving father, grandfather and great grandfather. Born in Philadelphia on November 6, 1918, he was the son of Henry and Bertha Schmidt. He graduated from Salem High School and was a member of the Salem, NJ State Group 1 baseball team. He retired from DuPont Chambers Works with 43 years of service and spent most of his adult life living on the Delaware River in Pennsville, NJ. Some of his fondest memories were duck hunting in the Salem Meadow and enjoying his life on the Delaware River with his family and friends. He used to say "Why do I need to go on vacation when I have the river in my back yard". He was a dedicated member of the Pennsville VFW, life time member of the Sons of The American Legion and spent many years as an Honor Guard presiding over veterans funerals. Survived by brother Billy Schmidt wife Marjorie, two children from his first wife, Shirley Marino and Jim Schmidt (wife Louise), grandchildren Phillip Marino, Tiffany Kelly (John), Dustin Schmidt (Sally), Megan Otruba (Stephen), and Nathan Schmidt, great grandchildren Drew, Devon, Savana, Roman, PJ, Gia, Jackie, Hannah, Henry, Katharine, Madeleine and baby. In addition, Billy Pyla, Shirley (Pyla) Trader and Allen Pyla. He was predeceased by his mother Bertha Schmidt/Ballinger, father Henry Schmidt, stepmother Naomi, first wife Marjorie (Collier), son-in-law Phillip Marino, granddaughter Nicole Marino, and second wife Ellen (Pyla), stepson Larry Pyla and many relatives and close friends. A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 am Wednesday March 23 where friends may call from 9:00 to 11:00 am prior to the service. Burial will be at the Salem County Veterans Cemetery Pilesgrove.
