Obituary of Joan M. Carey

Joan Marie (Dunn) Carey, 83, of Pennsville, NJ, passed away on March 8, 2015 at the Christiana Hospital Newark, DE. Joan was born in Pottstown, PA to William and Mary Theresa (Bettler) Dunn on September 27, 1931. She spent teenage years in West Philadelphia, PA. Joan toured Hawaii as a young adult, and was delighted to meet another PA native on that trip—Dave Carey, who she married in 1964, and who was her devoted husband for 35 years. She was a proud mother of her two sons, and took many part time jobs through the years---including as a bank teller, an office manager, and working at her sisters' restaurant, The Musical Bar. She made sure that her hours allowed her to dote on her sons after school and in the summers. She became a loving grandmother who was always thinking of the needs of her seven grandchildren and keeping them from harm with her prayers. Joan was an avid dog lover, and enjoyed the company of her current pet, Flyer, who she spoiled with attention. She is a long time parishioner at Queen of the Apostles Church. Joan is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, David, Jr. and Lisa Carey of Newark, DE, and Christopher and Anna Carey of Carney's Point, NJ. She is an adored grandmother to Elisabeth, Catherine, David III, and Ava Carey, and Regina, Isabella, and Sophia Carey. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, David, Sr., her parents, and her siblings: sisters Peg, Mary, Anna, Betty, Helen, and Helen "Steck", and brothers Bill, Mike, and Larry. Mass of Christian burial will be held at Queen of the Apostles Catholic Church in Pennsville, NJ on Friday, March 13, 2015 at 11:00am. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Media, PA. Visitation will be held at Laughrey Funeral Home in Pennsville, NJ on Thursday, March 12, from 7:00-9:00pm, and on Friday, March 13 from 10:00-10:45am. www.laughreyfuneralhome.com
