Obituary of Marie Juliette McEnany
Please share a memory of Marie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Marie Juliette Cromwell McEnany, a long-time resident of Salem County, New Jersey, and Talbot County, Maryland, passed after a long healthy life and a short illness on November 10, 2011. Julie was born in New York City in 1921 and spent the first part of her life in Westchester County, New York, with her parents, Merritt F. Cromwell and Elsie M. Flagg Cromwell, and her brother, Howard F. Cromwell. Julie received a B.S. degree from the College of New Rochelle. Like all of her generation, she was marked by the lessons of the Great Depression and then of the Second World War, during which she worked for DuPont in Kearney, N.J., as a laboratory supervisor. Shortly after the war she married Frederick L. McEnany, Jr., a highly-decorated Major of Engineers in Patton's Third Army, a widower with one young son. They lived for several years in Packanack Lake in Wayne Township, New Jersey, where Julie was an active participant in community life, including an acclaimed actress in the Packanack Players amateur theatre group. When the family moved to the old Johnson house on Supawna Road in Salem County in 1958, Julie, by then with three more children, turned her new homestead into a working farm, raising a 50-head herd of beef cattle. Julie became a fixture at Cowtown, New Jersey, buying calves and selling steers at auction, and was also instrumental in selling advertisements and organizing the annual Salem County Fair, where her children proudly presented various sheep and cattle. In 1967 Julie left Salem County when Fred, who also worked for DuPont, was transferred first to Germany and then to Switzerland. Julie came to Talbot County, Maryland, in 1979, where she and Fred purchased and restored a home from the early 1800s. Julie also continued her lifetime interest in purchasing and restoring antiques. Julie and Fred spent the last years of their retirement in Tinton Falls, New Jersey. Julie's older daughter, Lorna, a resident of Florida, passed to our great sadness in 2005, and Fred died after a long and eventful life and a short illness in 2006. Julie's surviving children, Fred III, John and Celia, remember their mother, father and sister with fondness. Julie is also survived by her brother, Howard, now living in Litchfield, Maine, and three grandchildren. Services will be private
