Elizabeth (Hammell) Zane, age 94 of Pennsville, passed away peacefully at the home of her granddaughter Mindy (Paulus) Smith on October 20, 2011. Betty moved in with Mindy and her husband Frank and great grandsons' Jacob and Mitchell Smith when her health started to fail after her husband, William J. "Bill" Zane died in 2001. With the excellent care of her family, she was able to maintain a happy life filled with love, family and friends. Betty was born in Wioodbury of July 25, 1917 to the late Slayton S. and Elizabeth (Feisler) Hammell, where she lived with her 7 siblings until she married Bill on October 30, 1937. They built a house and moved to Pennsville where they raised their 3 daughters, now predeceased, Darothy Bates, Shirley Paulus and Carol Stevenson. Betty, who was known to most as "Mommom", was a very energetic, generous, loving, nurturing woman who always put her family first. She was an excellent cook, loved to crochet, work puzzles, play cards, and eat crabs. She was always ready for any adventure and quite a comedian. In addition to her husband, children and parents, Betty was predeceased by sisters, Lucina Hammell and Mary DuBois, brothers, Ellison, Charles, Harry, Fred and Clayton Hammell. Betty is survived by six grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Monday October 24th at the Laughrey Funeral Home, Pennsville where friends may call from 10:00 to 11:00 AM prior to the service.
