Winifred "Wini" Carpenter (née Rathburn), age 96 of Pennsville, NJ died peacefully at Carneys Point Care Center on January 26, 2017.
Wini was born on January 29, 1920 in Maggie Valley, Haywood County, North Carolina to Charles W. Rathburn and Ella Leona Rathburn (Rich). After moving to South Jersey in 1938, Wini began working for Anchor Hocking as a glass inspector. She traveled the world as an Air Force wife, before beginning her true calling, that of Grandmom/Noni, and later as a Great Grandmom.
Wini is survived by her sons, Bill (Karen) of Pennsville, and Wyatt (Pam) of Canton, Ohio, 8 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband CMSgt William G. Carpenter, her son Wayne Cox, her parents, sisters Venice, Velma, Mary, Jackie, and Brothers William, Charles, Sam, Robert. Also predeceased by her first husband Walter Lewis Cox who was killed May 14, 1945 on Okinawa, Japan.
A funeral service is scheduled for Friday, February 3rd at 11:00AM at Laughrey Funeral Home in Pennsville; where friends may call one hour earlier. Burial will be at the Salem County War Veterans Memorial Park & Cemetery, in Pilesgrove, NJ following the service. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Wini's life.
