Melvin F. Powers Obituary

Melvin F. Powers of Pennsville, NJ, age 93, devoted husband, father, and Pop Pop, passed away peacefully at home on January 6, 2026. He leaves behind a legacy defined by service, craftsmanship, and an unwavering love for his family. To those who knew him, he was more than just a neighbor or a friend; he was a man who showed his love through his actions.

Melvin was born on July 6, 1932 to the late Walter S. and Ethel M. Powers. He was one of eight children and grew up in Deepwater, NJ. He graduated from Penns Grove Regional High School where he was an All-County baseball pitcher who once pitched a complete 17 inning game. After high school, he met the love of his life, Corinne, while they both worked at Anchor Hocking in Salem, NJ. He ultimately went on to enlist in the army in December 1952. Based in Virginia, he served his country until 1954.

During his time in the army, he married his wife of 64 years, on April 23rd of 1953. They were married at the Presbyterian Church in Salem. After his military service, he returned to Salem to help raise his wife's younger siblings. Their family grew as they welcomed their first daughter, Terry, in 1955 and their son, Michael, in 1959. Soon after, he and his wife purchased land and built a family home in Pennsville. They later welcomed their second daughter, Cindy, in 1964. They raised their children there and had a beautiful life together, creating many memories while camping, boating, and vacationing. Eventually, Melvin became a proud Pop Pop to Julie and Michael, who were his pride and joy, and he was later blessed with two great grandchildren, Gracie and Owen.

Melvin spent his entire career at Anchor Hocking in Salem as a mold maker and retired after 44 years. He was a dedicated and hard working employee. After retirement, Melvin and Corinne spent time taking bus trips and traveling together. They could be found boating and vacationing with family and friends.

Melvin spent a lot of time hosting loved ones for dinners and holidays. He was a quiet, kind, and devoted family man and friend. Melvin was willing to help anyone and everyone. He loved the outdoors and could often be found working in his yard, fishing, mowing lawns and plowing snow for the entire neighborhood. He was a master at fixing things and an excellent cook. An avid sports fan, he loved to watch the games on his porch. He also spent many hours listening to classic country music. Later in life, he spent most evenings at the Pennsville VFW. He built many relationships and friendships during his time there where he was affectionately known as "Pop".

Melvin is predeceased by his wife Corinne L. Powers and his beloved daughter Terry LaRocque. He is survived by his son Michael M. Powers (Lori), his daughter Cindy Madias (Billy), granddaughter Julie Carpenter (John), grandson Michael J. Powers (Christina), and great grandchildren Gracie and Owen Carpenter.
