Margaret Ann "Peggy" Sutton Haskey
July 6, 1933 – July 5, 2025
Margaret Ann "Peggy" Sutton Haskey passed peacefully from this life on July 5, 2025, just one day shy of her 92nd birthday.
Born on July 6, 1933, in Philadelphia, Peggy was the beloved daughter of Margaret and Roy Leon Sutton and the cherished elder sister of Roy Leon and Robert Sutton. In 1951, she married the love of her life, Albert Edward Haskey, and together they built a family rooted in faith, service, and love. Peggy was the devoted mother of Albert E. Haskey III, William, Maryann, Kathleen, Susan, and Andrew Haskey.
Peggy was a longtime and faithful member of Queen of Apostles Church and later St. Mary's Church in Salem. Her faith was not just personal—it was active. Her children can attest to the countless hours she devoted to parish life, from washing and starching altar linens and decorating the altar for Mass, to setting up for bingo nights and teaching CCD classes. She was a proud member of the Altar and Rosary Society and remained steadfast in her faith throughout her life. One of her most treasured moments was meeting Pope John Paul II—whom she deeply admired for his compassion and advocacy for the poor. Peggy lived her life guided by that same compassion. She didn't just talk the talk—she walked the walk.
Though she left school early to marry and raise her family, Peggy never let go of her dreams of education. Once her children were school-aged, she earned her GED and went on to graduate from Glassboro State College with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. She enjoyed a successful 20+ year career as a first-grade teacher and was the first in her family to earn a college degree—an achievement that inspired many of her children and grandchildren to pursue careers in education, medicine, and management. Education was one of her core values, and she passed it down with pride.
But perhaps Peggy's most cherished role was being "MomMom" to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her refrigerator was always covered with artwork, photos, and mementos from her "grandbabies," whom she adored. She leaves behind Kristie (Tom), Melissa (Luke), Tommy (Leanne), Danielle (Eric), Robert (Stephanie), and great-grandchildren Carter, Kora, Claire, Cole, LJ, Aiden, Davis, Kinsley, Malory, and Maeve.
Peggy's talents were many. A gifted seamstress, she often saved the day by altering wedding dresses at the last minute for nervous brides. She was a talented painter and sketch artist—a gift that lives on in several of her grandchildren. She loved music, the theater (especially Broadway), and traveling. Wherever she went, she met people with kindness and an open heart. She was a woman of grace, strength, and fierce independence. Hers was a life beautifully and fully lived.
The family offers special thanks to Peggy's devoted caregiver, Debbie Shimp, who became like another daughter and made it possible for Peggy to remain in her home until the very end. Gratitude also goes to Mrs. Peggy Kirby for her visits, prayers, and communion during the winter months when Peggy could no longer attend Mass, and to Sister Carol, Father Robert, and Father Cruz for their spiritual support.
Peggy was predeceased by her husband Albert, sons Albert III, William and Andrew, son-in-law Fred Morris, along with her brothers Roy and Robert Sutton. She is survived by her children Maryann Morris, Kathleen Haskey, and Susan Freuler (Tom), grandchildren, great-grandchildren, her sister-in-law May Sutton, many dear relatives, friends, and the countless people whose lives she touched with her compassion and faith. Her legacy is one of strength, love, and unwavering devotion—an example to all who knew her.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 AM on Friday July 11th at the St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 25 Oak St., Salem, NJ. Burial will follow at the Lawnside Cemetery, Woodstown, NJ
