Obituary of William Hill

Please share a memory of William to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
William "Bill" Hill, lifelong resident of Pennsville New Jersey, 93, passed peacefully in the evening of February 4, 2025. Born 1931 in Salem NJ to Elmer and Erma Mangan Hill, he grew up on a poultry farm that is now part of Supawna Meadows National Wildlife Refuge. Bill graduated Salem High School in the same class (1951) as Doris Abbott, the girl he married in 1954 after returning from the Korean War. He cared for Doris until her passing in 2012. For some years after that he helped friends and neighbors, including fellow members of Trinity United Methodist Church. Bill was known for his modesty and honesty. He was also an amateur bagpipe player and relished a trip to Scotland. Bill worked for decades at General Motors Boxwood Road plant, but he was not above carrying mail and pumping gas either. "Work hard" and "eat well" were his watchwords. In 2006 he received the Military Service Medal from Salem County. He enjoyed serving in honor guards and the annual Memorial Day parade after retirement. In his last years, when he became a bit of a storyteller, Bill was cared for by numerous kind people at The Lorelton in Wilmington, Delaware and the New Jersey Veterans Memorial Home in Vineland. Bill is survived by his daughter, Linda Chance of Philadelphia, and son David of Trenton, as well as two of his brothers, Elmer (Wanda Price) and Harry (Nancy Harris, deceased) and a sister-in-law, Lonna Buckalew Hill. He goes to join the rest of his brothers and their wives, James "Jim" (Carolyn Sheppard), Andrew "Andy" (Janet Champion), Robert "Bob" Sr. (Marion Crist), and Samuel Hill, as well as a sister, Marie Landsberger. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM on Wednesday February 12th at the Laughrey Funeral Home, Pennsville, NJ where friends may call from 10:00 to 11:00 AM prior to the service. Burial will follow at the East View Cemetery, Salem, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations to Pennsville Historical Society and Museum are welcome. See pvhistory.com/membership.htm for their memorial gift form.
