Sidney L. Riley of Elsinboro NJ, age 85, passed away peacefully on February 2nd at the Memorial Hospital of Salem County. Sid was born on March 9, 1933 to Lawrence and Dorothy (Buckalew) Riley and was a life-long resident of Salem County, NJ. He graduated from Salem High School and Trenton State College and was an educator in the Pennsville School District. Sid began his teaching career in 1957 as a chemistry teacher at PMHS and retired as principal of Central Park Elementary school in 1991. He earned a master's degree from Penn State in 1964 and studied towards a doctorate degree at Florida State University in 1968.
Sid loved Penn State football and Pennsville High School sports, particularly the wrestling program and the football program where he served as home football game play-by-play announcer for many years. Sid was a member of The Salem Country Club, the Elsinboro VFW, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and in April of 2018, he was honored for his 60th anniversary as a Master Mason. Sid was an avid fisherman his entire life. He was happiest fishing for flounder and king fish down the shore or perch, weakies and shad in the river.
Sid was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Joan and his son Michael . He is survived by his daughter, Sydney Joan Cochran and her husband, Tom, of Channahon IL; his daughter-in-law Frances (Ryan) Riley; and four grandchildren, Krista K (Cochran) VanAltvorst and her husband, David, of Channahon IL; Tom Cochran and his fiancée Sherri of Romeoville IL; Michael Riley and his wife Annie of Middletown DE; and Brian Riley of Pennsville.
A remembrance service will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM Friday February 8th at Laughrey Funeral Home, One North Broadway, Pennsville, NJ where family and friends are invited to pay their respects. Burial will be private.
