On March 18, 2018, Eugene "Gene" Lexington Bleckley of Carneys Point, NJ peacefully passed away at age 97. Born on March 15, 1921, to Theresa Roche Bleckley and Samuel Bleckley, Gene was a 1938 graduate of Penns Grove High School. After high school, Gene went on to serve in the United States Navy during WWII after which time he settled in Pennsville. In 1983 Gene retired from the Dupont Company after over 40 years service as a draftsman After his retirement Gene moved to St. Pete Beach, FL where he remarried and spent the next 20 years traveling the world with his wife, family and friends. In 2017 Gene moved back home to be with his family. He greatly enjoyed seeing new places and writing home about them. He also enjoyed playing poker, crossword puzzles, baseball and Wheel of Fortune. Eugene will probably be best remembered for his sense of humor, corny jokes and quick wit which he kept right up until the very end. Eugene was predeceased by his brothers, Edward and John Bleckley and his wife of 23 years, Betty Haas Bleckley. He is survived by his 2 daughters; Nancy Hemenway of Pennsville, NJ and Stephanie Petersen (Michael Glynn) of Pennsville, NJ, 4 grandchildren; Ian Hemenway of NY City, Jillian Hogate (John) of Penns Grove, Blair Petersen Walls (Alvery) of Carneys Point, and Cori Petersen of Pennsville, 2 great-grandchildren; Ava Hogate and Callan Walls, as well as long time friend Marge Ross and doting caretakers Dawn and Everett Smith, and Karen St. John.
Friends may come pay their respects on Thursday, March 22, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00pm at Laughrey Funeral Home 1 North Broadway Pennsville, NJ 08070. A memorial service will also be held at Laughrey's on Friday, March 23, 2018 at 11:00am.
